Pharmill Technology Ltd., a new joint venture company of Atritor Ltd & PMT Jetmill GmbH, is introducing a new concept in pharmaceutical micronising - the Pharmill CSJ 1-2-3, a 3in1 modular capacity unit to follow micronising through 3 stages of drug development - R&D, Clinical trial - initial, and Clinical trial - final. The unit has an advanced integral air classifier system, intended to give fingertip close control of drug sample particle size distribution.

'Pharmill' is a mark of Pharmill Technology Ltd., a new joint venture company of Atritor Ltd., Coventry, UK and PMT Jetmill GmbH, Leoben, Austria. Since Atritor has raised its profile in the pharmaceutical industry with installation of its range of spiral jet mills in major companies, including isolation equipment from customer-preferred suppliers, a market for an advanced spiral jet microniser has become evident. The industry has indicated its particular interest in a unit capable of controlling products down to ultra fine particle sizes, in some cases for specific surface areas above 3m²/g where multi-pass processing has up to now been the only solution.

For this reason Atritor chose PMT Jetmill as an associate, already recognising the impact that this small Austrian company was making on the world of powder technology in the minerals and advanced materials markets. Atritor has already sold 2 standard PMT Jetmill systems into these industries in the UK against stiff international competition, thanks to the technical product advantage offered by PMT's classification technology.

The Pharmill CSJ1-2-3, incorporates an advanced integral classifier system and a multi-application feature. This feature will allow the same machine body to be operated at 3 different feed rates, e.g. 4, 8 or 16 kg/h, simply by changing the configuration of the classifier, jet nozzles & top closure.

This unique "3 stage" microniser feature (CSJ1,2&3) for R&D, pilot scale and small scale production will give tremendous flexibility when a pharmaceutical company is bringing new drugs to the market. The Pharmill CSJ1-2-3 will facilitate the use of one piece of equipment to micronise early development quantities of product and, early and late stage clinical trial material. Therefore a seamless transition from small quantities produced on a lab machine to larger amounts will be possible. Since the same piece of equipment would be utilised, validation of the transitional stages and technical transfer would also be simplified by having the same process control philosophy - hardware and software - in place.
